What salt air does to your gear

Salt is relentlessly corrosive, and on an exposed coast like Betty’s Bay it is in the air constantly, not just on the days you can smell the sea. It attacks every metal part of a satellite installation:

  • The LNB — the business end on the dish arm — corrodes at its contacts and connectors, degrading the signal it can pick up.
  • Brackets and bolts rust and weaken, which lets the dish move in the wind and eventually compromises the mount entirely.
  • Connectors corrode internally, and once the seal is gone, water follows the salt straight into the join.
  • The copper inside cheap coax oxidises, so even an intact-looking cable quietly loses signal along its length.

The result is a slow decline rather than a sudden failure: a picture that pixelates a little more each month until one windy evening it gives up entirely, usually with an E48-32 error on screen.

That gradual decline is exactly why so many people misdiagnose it. Because the picture is still mostly fine for months, the corrosion goes unnoticed until it crosses a threshold and the signal collapses — and at that point it looks like a sudden fault rather than the slow process it really was. The honest truth is that by the time you can see rust on the LNB or the bracket, the damage has been underway for a long while and the connectors you cannot see are usually worse.
