Fixing Problems After a DStv Dual View Installation

11 Oct 2026·7 min read

The second TV is blank, the main one is fine, and the technician only left last week. Most problems after a DStv dual view installation come down to one thing: the main decoder is off. Switch it on at the wall, give both boxes a few minutes, and the second room usually comes back. If it doesn't, this Betty's Bay guide walks through the rest.

Quick answer: After a DStv dual view setup, most faults start at the primary decoder. Make sure it's on at the wall, then restart both boxes, check the cables are tight and confirm your account is paid up. If both TVs lose signal, the dish or weather is to blame. If only one does, look at the link your installation created between the decoders.

First fix: switch the primary decoder back on

An XtraView pair has a boss. DStv calls it the primary decoder, and the second box only runs while it keeps hearing from the primary. Turn the primary off, unplug it or take it away, and the other TV goes quiet.

That's why this is the number one call we get from holiday homes along the coast. Someone switches everything off at the wall before driving back to the city. The next visitor switches only the bedroom box on and thinks the install has failed. Our notes on readying an empty holiday home help avoid that.

  1. Find the primary decoder. It's normally the one at the main lounge TV.
  2. Switch it on at the wall and wait for the picture to settle.
  3. Now switch on the secondary decoder and give it a few minutes.
  4. Change channels on both TVs to make sure they work at the same time.

Use the symptom to find the cause. This table covers what we see most often on the Overberg coast.

Only the second TV has a problem

When just one room fails, the dish is almost certainly fine. The trouble sits between the two boxes. DStv says the link can be upset by interference or cabling errors, not only by the primary being off.

  • Is the coax at the back of the second decoder screwed on, not just pushed?
  • Has anyone added a splitter, booster or extra TV point since the install?
  • Was the primary moved to another room and plugged into a different wall plate?
  • Did a power cut leave the primary stuck on a start-up screen?

A splitter from a hardware store is a common culprit. It can look harmless but upset the link. Unplug anything added after the install and restart both boxes, primary first.

Good to know: Both linked decoders carry the same package. If one TV is missing a channel the other has, the cause is that box's authorisation, not your package.

Both TVs lose picture together

If both screens fail at once, look outside. Betty's Bay gets fierce wind, and a gusty south-easter can shift a dish by a few millimetres. That's enough to lose the satellite completely.

Salt is the slow enemy. In homes close to the beach and in Silver Sands, sea air eats unsealed connectors and brackets. Read more about salt air and satellite gear if your dish is near the beach.

Mountains matter too. Some plots on the slopes towards Hangklip have a tight view of the northern sky, so the dish has less margin in heavy rain. A careful satellite dish alignment with a signal meter gives that margin back.

Empty holiday homes and your DStv dual view installation

Lots of homes here stand empty for weeks. That causes problems a full-time house in town never has. DStv's own advice helps: if you often take one decoder away on holiday, make that one the primary.

Before you lock up, decide which box stays and which travels. Leave the staying decoder plugged in if guests or family will visit. Our checklist for a holiday home DStv check covers what to test before the season.

Baboons on the roof are another local twist. They pull at cables and lean on dishes. If the trouble started after a troop visit, look at our notes on baboons and roof equipment.

When a DStv dual view installation needs a technician

Some faults can't be cleared from the couch. Call us if a restart and cable check don't help, if both TVs show no signal in dry weather, or if you see corrosion on the dish arm.

Safety first: Don't climb a ladder or get onto the roof to look at the dish, especially in wind. Never open a decoder or touch the LNB wiring. Leave anything up high or near mains power to a technician.

If you're replacing one of the linked decoders, DStv's guide says to contact MultiChoice first to break the old link before you disconnect the cable. Skipping it leaves the new box stuck. Our XtraView setup service handles swaps like this, as well as adding an Explora through our Explora installation work.

DStv dual view installation: FAQs

Why is my second TV not working after a DStv dual view installation?

Most of the time the primary decoder is off or unplugged. The second box needs the primary running to work. Switch the primary on at the wall, restart the secondary and check its cable is tight. If that fails, look for a splitter or extra point added later.

Why is my DStv extra view not working?

Check that the primary decoder is on, that both cables are screwed in and that your account is paid. Restart both decoders, primary first. If only one TV fails, the link between the boxes is the likely cause. If both fail, it's the dish or the weather.

Can wind affect a DStv dual view installation in Betty's Bay?

Yes. Strong wind can nudge the dish out of line, and both linked decoders then lose signal together. Salt air also corrodes connectors over time. A firm bracket, sealed connectors and accurate alignment help the system ride out the windy months.

How do I reset XtraView decoders?

Switch both decoders off at the wall, wait about a minute, then switch on the primary first. Once it shows a picture, switch on the secondary. Don't do a factory reset unless DStv or a technician asks you to, as it means running the setup again.

Do I need to contact DStv after fixing an XtraView problem?

Not if a restart fixed it. If a channel is missing on one box, re-authorise it through the MyDStv app or dstv.com. If you replaced a decoder, DStv must link the new one on your account so billing and channels match.
