New router, new problem: the decoder forgets how to get online. To connect DStv Explora to WiFi again after a router swap, you only need to tell the decoder about the new network name and password. In Betty's Bay this often happens when a holiday home moves to fibre or a new LTE router while nobody's there, and the Explora sits offline until the next visit.
Quick answer: After a router change, press the blue DStv button and go to Settings, System Settings and Connectivity Set-up. Pick the new network, enter its password and let the Explora test the link. With a cable, move it to the new router's LAN port. That's all it takes to connect your DStv Explora to WiFi on the new router.
Your decoder remembers one network name and one password. A new router from your internet provider almost always comes with a fresh name and password printed on its sticker. The Explora keeps looking for the old one and gives up.
DStv's own WiFi Connector guide says exactly this. If the network name changes or the password is reset, repeat the Connectivity Set-up step. Nothing is broken, and you don't need new hardware. Our earlier post on setting up the WiFi Connector covers the first-time install.
Technician tip: When the new router is set up, ask your provider to use the same WiFi name and password as the old one. Every device in the house, decoder included, then reconnects by itself and you skip these steps entirely.
These steps are for older Explora models that use the DStv WiFi connector for Explora decoders, the little USB adapter in a docking station.
If the new network doesn't appear, the router may be in a different spot to the old one. Move the dock to where it can pick up the signal better and search again. If you have a second decoder in an XtraView setup, give it the same treatment.

A wired Explora is even simpler. Unplug the network cable from the old router and plug it into a LAN port on the new one. Then press Help on the remote, open Tools and run the Connectivity Checker to confirm the link.
Some new routers sit in a different room, often wherever the fibre or LTE installer found a plug point. If the cable no longer reaches, don't string an extension across a passage. Our home WiFi and network installation service can put a neat network point beside the TV.
Safety first: Leave any cable runs through the ceiling, roof or outside walls to a technician. Wind and salt air around Betty's Bay make roofs a risky place to work. Switch off at the wall before you unplug the old router from a crowded multiplug.
The Explora Ultra has WiFi built in, so there's no dock or adapter to worry about. Open its settings menu, go to the network options and select the new WiFi name, then enter the password, the same way it was done at setup.
Not sure which model you have? Our comparison of Explora and Explora Ultra shows the differences.
| What changed | WiFi Connector Explora | Cabled Explora |
|---|---|---|
| New WiFi name and password | Rerun Connectivity Set-up | Nothing, just move the cable |
| Same name and password kept | Usually reconnects alone | Move the cable to the new router |
| Router moved to another room | Move the dock, search again | May need a longer cable or network point |
| New provider, slower line | Check speed at the TV | Check speed at the TV |
DStv recommends at least 4Mbps for SD streaming and 10Mbps for HD, and data charges apply. If you switched to a capped deal to save money on a weekend house, keep an eye on Catch Up downloads.
Holiday homes in Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooi-Els can stand empty for weeks. Run the Connectivity Checker and play something on Catch Up before you go. Then make sure Connected Services is on under Settings and User Preferences, so Remote Recordings work while you're away.
Remote Recordings and Catch Up Plus need the monthly Access Fee, R125 at the time of writing. Our notes on getting an empty home ready cover the rest of the checklist, from power to security.
If the Explora still won't connect after these steps, call a technician. Live TV problems like E48-32 come from the dish, not the router, so a DStv signal repair may be the real fix.

Press the blue DStv button, go to Settings, then System Settings and Connectivity Set-up. Choose the new network, enter the new password and let the decoder test the link. If your Explora uses a cable, just move it to a LAN port on the new router.
The new router may be further away or behind more walls than the old one. Move the WiFi Connector's docking station to a more open spot and search again. Also check the router is broadcasting its WiFi and you're looking for the right name.
No. The same connector works with any home router. You only need to rerun Connectivity Set-up with the new network name and password. Keeping the old name and password on the new router means the decoder can reconnect without any setup.
Connect the decoder to the TV with HDMI, then join the house WiFi through Connectivity Set-up. Test Catch Up before you leave, because the house may stand empty for weeks. If the router is far from the TV, we can add a network point.
Only if the router has no password, which we don't recommend. Most home routers are secured, so the Explora asks for the password during Connectivity Set-up. Use the one printed on the router sticker unless you've changed it.
